Why do established companies let good opportunities slip?

Many established companies have expertise, technology or customer relationships that could generate new profits. These opportunities are often discussed, but rarely move forward, for four reasons:

  • Focus

Management attention goes to the day-to-day business, where the pressure and the results are.

  • Incentives

Executives are measured on current targets; a new business brings risk with no immediate reward.

  • Processes

Budgets and decision-making are designed to run a mature business, not to build a new one.

  • Risk

Committing a team or a senior hire before there are results is hard to justify.

Every year on hold means missing new profits and competitive advantage. To move forward, these opportunities need dedicated leadership, a fast route to market and gradual investment based on results. That’s what Qonsius provides.

How we work

We build a real business, with customers and revenue, not a slide deck. We work in five stages, each with a clear objective and a decision at the end. You only keep investing when the results support it.

  1. We lead

    1 · A business worth building

We assess the opportunity and agree with management how to test it with potential customers.

  2. We lead

    2 · First paying customers

We take the offer to market, aiming for first revenue in around 6 months.

  3. We hand over

    3 · A dedicated leader

We help bring in a dedicated business leader and hand over the operation.

  4. We support

    4 · A repeatable model

We help the leader confirm that the business can consistently win customers and deliver what it sells.

  5. We support

    5 · A business at scale

We run monthly reviews with the leader and management to assess results and adjust the growth plan.

We share the risk with you. We agree a fixed fee for each stage, plus variable fees linked to commercial milestones and the new business’s revenue. On average, variable fees account for ~60% of our total fees.

Who we work with

  • Companies

Profitable, with yearly revenue from €20 million, including family-owned groups.

  • Opportunities

New business models or markets that build on what the company already has and can reach 10–15% of the size of its core. We favour fast commercialisation over long R&D cycles.

  • When we fit

The CEO wants to launch a new business, but the team is focused on the core and hiring a dedicated leader is not yet justified.

About us

Qonsius is a firm that launches new businesses. We bring strategy to shape the opportunity, execution to take it to market and investment expertise to help you decide how much to commit at each stage, based on results.

Most of our work has been in energy transition and cleantech, but our method works in any sector where the fit is right.

We work discreetly and take on only a few projects at a time. That way, each one gets our full attention and we can answer for the results. We’re based in Madrid, with clients in Spain and abroad, and we travel whenever a project needs it.
